Research, lecture and university course on visual sustainability

See also here.

In 2019–2020 I am guest teacher at the BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration at Konstfack University as initiator and coordinator of the first course of its kind on sustainability through visuality.

Sustainability has become an urgent question for the visual field, where the discourse around it is often blurry and limited to questions of materialisation. This course presents a largely new approach stemming from my own research and work in the social and cultural sectors, as well as lead designer at the Stockholm Environment Institute.

Through a feminist, post-colonial approach to form and pedagogy, the course uncovers the multi-layered impact(s) of visuality, as well as strategies for bringing responsibility as integrated approach to visual practice, with a focus on structural changes though the final form. It advocates for a quantum thinking around sustainability (rather than a binary one) approaching it as a matter of delicate interdependencies.

In 2020 this course expands to the BFAs across disciplines at Konstfack. I am also co-lead of a similar course at the BFA in graphic design at Beckmans College of Design, invited by graphic designer and colleague Brita Lindvall Leitmann.

The opening presentation of the course works well as a comprehensive introduction to holistic sustainability through form across programs and institutions. In 2020 the introductory lecture is hosted by Umeå University and the University of the Arts in Bremen.

To discuss the lecture or the course for your institution, please get in touch.
